Institute of water problems, hydropower engineering and ecology
734063, Dushanbe city, Republic of Tajikistan, 12, Parvin Street
Tel: (+992 37) 224-52-31
The Institute was established in 2002 based on the Department of Water Problems and Ecology of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan. During 2000-2002, it was headed by the corresponding member H. Safiev. The first director of the institute was academician U.M. Mirsaidov (2002). During 200-2009, the institute was headed by the corresponding member I.Sh. Normatov. Since 2009, Dr. Z.V. Kobuliev is the director of the institute.
Investigation of bentonites for preparation of mixed coagulants for water purification
Currently, the Institute has six laboratories;
- water resources and hydro-physical processes;
- Environment and Sustainable Development;
- power engineering, and resource-saving;
- climatology and glaciology;
- water quality, hydro and biogeochemistry;
- modeling and information management;
Department of innovative technologies and scientific and educational research, which includes design and survey groups and the editorial and publishing sector.
The main areas of research associated with the analysis of the state and prospects of the general power energy and hydropower of Tajikistan are;
- Study of Renewable Resources of Energy engineering of Tajikistan;
- Resource inventory and assessment of the possibilities of using them by category;
- Study of Small Hydropower engineering in Tajikistan;
- Analysis of water and energy resources and their variability.
The most important research institute include;

- Development of models and methods for forecasting of runoff for hydropower;
- Development of methods to optimize of hydropower plants with reservoirs;
- Development of methods to regulate water flow for hydropower engineering and irrigation;
- Analysis of international and national laws on sharing by water and energy resources of Trans Boundary Rivers;
- Development of methods for economic assessing value of water at its joint use for hydropower engineering and irrigation.
Among the scientific achievements of the Institute are the following:
- Development of methods for rapid and long-term predictions of water flow for hydropower;
Development of methods mathematical modeling for optimization of large hydropower plants with reservoirs; - Development of economic models of development of hydropower engineering and irrigation at the sharing by hydropower resources of trans boundary rivers of the Aral Sea Basin;
- Assessment of renewable energy resources of Tajikistan and the possibilities of their use.
For theses defense, of candidate of technical sciences council is operating in three specialties in the institute.
The process of analyses of water
The Institute organized a number of international and national conferences and seminars related to the state, problems and prospects of water resource management. The Institute participated and is currently involved in the implementation of major international projects, among which are:
- “Regional Environmental Programme for Central Asia 2009 (EURECA), Component 4:
- Environmental Awareness Raising (AWARE)”; World Bank project “Feasibility Study”
- “Comparative analysis of cascade hydropower plants on rivers of Tajikistan” (2008 to 2009), “CASA Project -1000” Central Asia-South Asia
- Project Electricity Trading and Transmission (2008 to 2009), “Project of the World Bank and the Tajik branch (UNDP)”, Informing the public on the proposed by World Bank Social and Environmental Assessment for the Rogun plant Project (2009) “Tajikistan Monitoring & Warning” (2009),
- The international project “Study of the hydrological characteristics of the Zarafshan River Basin”, funded by the Volkswagen Foundation (Germany) (2008-2011.)
- UN regional project “Development of national registers of pollutant release and transfer in the two countries in transition period (Tajikistan and Belarus)” (2001).
In the recent years, members of the Institute have published over 150 scientific papers, 20 books and booklets, received 30 patents of the Republic of Tajikistan for inventions.
Currently, the institute has 40 employees, including five doctors and eight candidates.
