Institute of humanities

The Institute for Human Sciences was founded in 1991 by the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan for further expansion of fundamental research on languages, original spiritual culture, history, economics, and social consciousness of the peoples of Gorno-Badakhshan; an autonomous Region of Tajikistan.

 

H. Dodihudoev was the first director organizer of the Institute during 1991-2000. From 2000 to the present, director of the institute is Sh. Yusufbekov.

The Institute consists of the following research units:

  • department of the Pamir languages;
  • department of Folklore and Literature;
  • department of History, ethnography, archeology and culture;
  • department of Social and Economic Research.

The main directions of scientific research of the institute are:

  • study of the Pamir languages, multilingual folk and literary genres, their preservation and further development;
  • creation of scientific sources through the collection of linguistic, folklore, ethnography, religious materials from the population, the creation of scientific foundations for language, folklore and literary works, ethnography, music art, religion, material and spiritual culture of the peoples of Badakhshan;
  • publication of the Pamir-speaking linguistic, folkloric, ethnographic texts with Tajik and Russian scientific translations, commentaries, and indexes in order to make them accessible to Orientalists as Tajikistan and other countries;
  • continuation of simultaneous current and historical study of the Pamir languages in comparative-typological perspective, the definition of their relationship between themselves and their place among the other Iranian, Indo-Aryan (Indian) and the Indo-European languages;
  • sociolinguistic study of the Pamir languages, and their mutual influence and benefit from other languages;
  • development of comparative, etymological, and other onomastic dictionaries for Pamir languages , as well as drawing in perspective of linguistic atlas of the Pamir languages;
  • development and scientific publication of a multivolume set of Badakhshan folklore;
  • continuation of the genre and the study of Badakhshan typology of folklore;
  • scientific publication and research writing, and Pamir-speaking Tajik-
    Persian literature of Badakhshan, the provision of scientific and methodological assistance in the creation and design of the memorial museum of contemporary poets and writers of Badakhshan;
  • the study and publication of Ismaili philosophical and religious literature, the definition of its relation with Zoroastrianism, Sufism, Buddhism;
  • Ethno-cultural study of the Pamir peoples to create a living ethnographic atlas of Badakhshan ethnic group;
  • study the history of the Pamir peoples and their material and spiritual culture from ancient times to the present day;
  • preparation and publication of primers, textbooks, dictionaries, grammars of native languages for students of Pamir and Pamir self-study languages;
  • coordination and scientific contacts with experts of CIS countries, as well as foreign and Iranists experts to the comparative study presented in Badakhshan and Pamir languages of foreign countries, the organization of joint scientific expeditions to the regions of existence of the Pamir languages, organization of scientific seminars, conferences, symposia, publication of proceedings in linguistic and cultural areas;
  • the fundamental socio-economic studies of the Pamirs and the development of recommendations for the socio-economic development in Badakhshan and the republic.

The Institute has 36 employees, including 4 doctors and 11 candidates.

The Institute has research links with institutions of linguistics, oriental studies, philosophy, history and Anthropology, Russian State Humanities University, Faculty of Oriental Studies, St. Petersburg State University, Department of Iranian languages of the Institute of Asian and African Studies of Moscow State University and scientific institutions of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic Tajikistan. In the field of Ismaili heritage, philosophy, Institute collaborates with the London Institute of Ismailizms.

Institute staff conducted synchronously and partly diachronic monographic study of phonetics, grammar, vocabulary and lexicography of Pamir languages spoken in the territory of Tajikistan and foreign countries, as reflected in the following works of linguists:

  • M. Alamshoev, D. Karamshoev “Hugnuni Ziv” (Shugnan language for grades 1-4) (2000);
  • Sh. Mirzoev “A system of synonyms, and vocabulary of Shugnan language” (1999);
  • M. Mamadaslamov “The system of space-time prepositions of Shugnan-Rushan Group of Pamir languages” (1999);
  • Z.O. Nazarova “System of Ishkashim verb” (1998);
  • I. Rahimov “Ethnographic vocabulary of Yazgulyam language in historical interpretation” (1991).

 

In the field of folklore and the literature of Badakhshan, typological study of the genre of folklore and literature of the region was conducted by;

  • N. Shakarmamadov “Dargilik-genre “Folklore” (1992);
  • N. Shakarmamadov "Folklore of Pamir”, “Papers of Shugnan and Rushan peoples” (1992);
  • N. Shakarmamadov “Wedding songs of Pamir” (1993);
  • N. Shakarmamadov “Historical and cultural heritage of the people” (2011).

By the employees of the department of folklore and literature of Badakhshan, the publication of the Code of folklore of Pamir was done in volume 2 i.e. “People’s stories”, in volume 3 and 4 i.e. “Tales” and in volume 5 i.e. Pamir songs”.

In the field of philosophy, religion and sociology, institute conducted a comprehensive study of the Ismaili population and its relationship to Zaroastrizm, Sufism and other trends in the Muslim East, and is reflected in numerous publications by prof. H.D. Dodihudoev and A. Shohumorov.

The problem of integrated development and deployment of the productive forces of Badakhshan and the evaluation of the economic prerequisites for the further development of the productive forces, analysis of the current state of economic and social development of Badakhshan in market economy was studied.
